First we visited the Promenade des Anglais, and then by convertible we saw it in a fabulous vista from Mt Boron, where Elton John, Bon Jovi and Tina Turner have their residences. After that, we arrived at the splendid hotel. The first day was already enchanting ! And the hotel room ? Jacuzzi for two, decorated with rose petals and a bottle of champagne to top it all off !
The next day was between the sea and the sky aboard a superb boat cruising around the beautiful Lérins islands and a gourmet meal on the bridge of the yacht.
On the third day we discovered breathtaking views of the Italian and French Rivieras by helicopter, not forgetting Monaco.
So we promised each other that day will be the model for our life : shared happiness !

A warm welcome at the airport and being whisked off in a sumptuous convertible for a trip along the coast to Cannes in the agreeable June sunshine was one of our dreams…
And then, taking our time, being waited on by friendly smiling professionals, it was like meeting up with old friends. George hadn’t told me anything in advance. I was looking at the superb hotels on the Croisette…but what I hadn’t thought of was that our first day was to be spent on…. A luxury yacht ! We went off on a mini-cruise to visit the beautiful islands of the Riviera and the Cote d’Azur.
When we got back to dry land, we were expected. A few dozen yards and we found ourselves in a palace hotel where we spent the night after a delicious meal prepared by one of the top chefs on the Riviera.
But then it was my turn to surprise George. The next day we left early for our first-ever trip in a hot-air balloon. Over the perfumed lavender fields, with the gorgeous natural colours of the mediterranean…
Our anniversary was truly unforgettable ! We shared our dreams once more, as we have over the past 30 years of our life together. Life is beautiful !
My friends are great…but a little too mysterious ! So kind of them to reach into their pockets to give me something really special for my 20th birthday. So when the day came, I imagined anything and everything except a little envelope ! Didn’t they have any ideas ? They’d done like the old folks and given me a cheque ? But no, when I opened it, it was just a plane ticket, nothing else. But a return ticket, phew ! at least they weren’t trying to get rid of me ! It was an enigma. But they’ve known me since I was little. I’ve always loved doing sports, and the more the better ! For me, there’s gotta be action !
When I arrived at Nice airport, a man was waiting for me. In the car park I understood why they told me to bring just a backpack. A Honda Goldwing is a magnificent machine !
Arriving at the hotel I was told to be ready in sports gear the next day.
We left a 8am to go to a free fall simulator. It felt great, and I mastered it fairly easily, but I was hungry for more. When I said that, I saw my guide smile. After a specially-prepared light meal and a de-briefing of the morning, I found myself in the countryside…well almost, because an aerodrome is never in the centre of town. Finally I understood the light meal and the de-briefing when I was 10,000 feet up in the air, strapped to a free-fall instructor !
The next day, I changed vehicle and chauffeur. This time it was a convertible BMW which took me into the Var for a sportscar session. Seeing one go by is great, but being at the wheel of a Formula 1 car is another world ! How can I explain it ? It’s like free-fall, but instead of being weightless, it’s a mega-powerful engine driving you.
I still love sport. But in those 48 hours I tasted some crazily wonderul experiences !

We decided to have a weeks’ break, the same 6 of us that have known each other since childhood. Just for the pleasure of catching up, and to do everything we’d dreamed of.
Nice, the Negresco Hotel, the sea.
The first day we went on a catamaran cruise, out at sea, and then the coastal islands. Two days on the boat, navigation, visits, sunshine.
In the evening at our rented villa on Cap Ferrat, time stood still as we ate on the terrace overlooking the sea. The next day the men went off skin diving while we women decided to go swimming with the dolphins. For this incredible experience we went to Cannes – watching from the boat, and then in the water with a whale and a group of dolphins. Just amazing !
To indulge the gourmets in our party, we followed the ‘Wine Trail’, wisely designating a water-drinker ! We had the pleasant surprise of being taken on a glider baptism, the idea of one of our friends who adores that. What a feeling ! being carried on the wind in silence, just like a bird…
In those few days, it was as if we had gone through a magic door into our very own paradise !
